رد مشاركة : Let's learn idioms together..
Slam again, and I am happy to read a feedback from you... However, as I mentioned, the idiom is rarely used in the Arab context but still it is nice to learn a new thing even if it is away from my context. Now, I have anotehr idiom which is famous in both Syria and England. It is " she has the cake and she'll have it". this idiom is used when , and especially, a woman wants to get every available choice , or let's say it in a clearer way, a woman who has to choose one of two choices , and she will try to get both. there is an Arabic idiom which I heard in Deir Ezzor ( a Syrian city) that has the same meaning and usage. it says in Arabic:
أريد أمي و أريد حلب
the usage of this Arabic idiom is meant to express the idea I have explained above. the Arabic idiom has a historical background and cultural implication, as I know. It is related to the women , in the mid-fifties of the last century, who kept thinking that Aleppo is a beautiful city, which is really so. such women used to ask their men to take them to Aleppo as for a honey-moon or to do shopping , and the like. when they were asked to choose either to do shopping in their city (Deir Ezzor) or to go to Aleppo for it, they chose to do the shopping in the two places. So, they wanted to get the two choices at the same time. Sorry , it seems I went too far in explaining the idiom. Hope you enjoy it (in real life , not in academic writing as it is not formal idiom).
