Seaweeds are forms of algae. Algae grow
rapidly in water which is rich in phosphates
and/or nitrates. When these levels increases,
for example when fertiliser runoff
enters the water, the algae multiply to form
huge floating mats called blooms, blocking
out the light and inhibiting the growth of
other organisms. When the algae die, they
combine with all the oxygen in the water so
that other organisms suffocate.
